In Bob Seger's great song two ex-lovers meet and still don't see eye to eye. There ain't no good guy...there ain't no bad guy!
Giordano Bruno wasn't quite as lucky when he got back together with the church. That in itself isn't shocking. And, of course the minor fact that he was right didn't sit well either.
His quote,"I neither ought to, or will, recant" might indicate a problem with authority. Now, that would be a prescription for a drug or two and a come see me again in two weeks...don't forget your insurance card.
The other famous line was, "In pronouncing my sentence, you fear is greater than mine in hearing it". The fact that the church then nailed his tongue to the roof of his mouth, wired his jaw shut and burned him to death upside down before dawn in a period of "public", very public execution lends credence...in case you didn't think of that as overkill. They then collected all of the ashes and threw them into the Tevere to avoid the posibility of "relics" occurring.
Man has not invented the time machine yet. So the genius that was, can never be rekindled. Copernicus and Galileo are names our histories mention and some remember. Stifling thoughts and ideas was commonplace then and from of the more current events calling the church a "slow learner" is way beyond gross exaggeration.
The statue erected by the Masons 1889 was supposed to be set with Bruno facing the sunrise, lighting his face. Our of "respect" to the church his backside was repositioned. For this "respect" Giordano remains one of the few martyrs the church has not fully apologized for....his ideas went to far!
Today the statue is a symbol of just what one man and free thought can accomplish. Another more abstract statue of Bruno now graces a city in Germany.
Oh, one more time, his ideas have proved out!
So I sit here near his statue typing out humorous ideas and thoughts in his name. I don't agree with the concept of damning people from the past from our 21st century viewpoint. Five hundred years have passed, vast amounts of knowledge amassed and put instantly into our hands and heads, somebody should be paying attention and reviewing the old game plan!
