Memories

You're losing your mind! Not really. You can't lose what you don't have.

Wendy just poured my coffee. She will return and keep it full until I order. Why is it easier for me to write here than in my own kitchen? My coffee is stronger. She told me why, at home I am surrounded by the mundane, the things that need attention. Here I am part of living. She's right. Real writers do the same thing...at least they claim to and acknowledge the cafes that keep their spots open.

I have a memory of an old TV ad claiming that "a mind is a terrible thing to lose". Whether my memory is up to par or not the statement certainly rings true. Memories are our true treasures. They give hope when our spirits are low and they light the path to goals that our thoughts have created.

Our feelings and emotions seem to guide our thoughts. It is a lot easier to learn if you like something and a lot harder if you don't. Some of our feelings are innate. We have them pretty much from birth. Smiles and frowns are early ways to tell if your child is happy or not. Most creatures are born knowing fear. Birth itself is traumatic. But, some fears are self created and maybe self defeating...a catch 22 thing.
Fear of failure isn't something we are born with. We learn it. Think of the concept, you are afraid of failure. Thus, you don't try and of course by not trying you fail.

In life not trying could be the worst imaginable practice. You won't, can't, don't wish to talk. The result is easy to discern. Few friends, poor relationships, terrible marriages, etc. The ability to read minds is a sci-fi concept that hasn't seen fruition yet! No one can or will automatically compensate for your withdrawal.

You only get so many chances to tell someone you care. Don't miss your chance. Like in the beginning of this piece, you can't lose what you don't have. Speak now, or forever hold your peace is more than a throw away line in your marriage vows. To have a memory you need to make an attempt...at something. Knowing what Laverne and Shirley said to each other in episode 22 isn't a memory...it's just sad.

My sister-in-law, Brenda said that I am very lucky to have so many good memories. She's right too. Think I'll try for some more.
